I am rallying for Educational Tutorial Services and asking my supporters to join me in support. I started Educational Tutorial Services in 1996 when I realized there were no tutoring organizations dedicated to foster youth and the specific academic challenges they face on a daily basis. These students were falling through the cracks in our education system. We have provided in-home tutoring to 20,000 foster youth across the country.
Although foster youth continue to struggle in our education system, Educational Tutorial Services is making a positive impact. In academic year 2012-2013, our outcomes tracking data showed that 87% of the students we served made gains in reading and 79% made gains in math on their standardized tests. We improve attendance and reduced negative behavior, common dropout indicators.
Unfortunately, we are only reaching a small portion of the youth in care with this approach. Students in foster care are more likely than any other group to have significant disruptions in their education. At least one-third of the nearly 500,000 students in care annually in this country will experience five or more different placements and that could mean changing schools as frequently.
We need financial support and help getting the word out about our rally. All funds raised will be used for program support and scholarships so we can help more youth in care. Many of the youth we serve have the same tutor over several school years. Pleas support this rally today!
