Thank you for your continued support through the last few months. We have reached our financial goal for my legal team to properly fight in the 4th Circuit Court. Depending on the outcome of the proceedings in January, we may have to take this fight to the Supreme Court! If this does happen, we will begin fundraising once again for the additional work it will take to fight the good fight. In the meantime, here’s an update on what has happened in the last month.
The government has filed their appellate brief, and we have filed our reply brief. From the look of things, I anticipate that this will be a long and difficult fight. It’s hard for anyone to take criticism well, least of all the government. But I maintain the point that their actions represent a drastic overreach -- the beginning of the end of your digital privacy rights.
While maintaining the pressure on the legal side, I want to continue to help provide defenses against undue surveillance outside the courts. Therefore, I have begun raising funds in order to turn Lavabit’s source code into an open-source resource for those who (like me) value privacy in their communications.
I’m thrilled to be a part of the Dark Mail Alliance alongside Silent Circle and their amazing team. It’s my hope that the system of protocols that we will establish will fundamentally change the structure of our online communications, making it safer, more secure and more reliable.
My deepest gratitude,
