In 2011, Carlos Gutierrez lost his legs and fled his homeland. In 2013 he will ride his bike 710 miles, across Texas, to raise awareness of the corruption and impunity in Mexico.
As the owner of a successful business in Chihuahua, Mexico, Carlos was a target for extortion by local cartels. Criminals began demanding Carlos make payments to them of up to $10,000 monthly. Law enforcement did nothing to help. No investigations were made, no attempts to prevent the extortion. Soon, Carlos could no longer afford to pay. The criminals found another way to charge him. On September 30, 2011, armed men cut off his feet and left him to die, an example to other business owners.
Miraculously, Carlos survived. No longer safe in Mexico, he and his family fled to the U.S. and requested political asylum. Now they are rebuilding their lives, and Carlos is learning to walk again with the use of prosthetic legs.
As part of his therapy and to raise awareness about the growing violence in Mexico, Carlos is riding from El Paso, TX, to Austin the state’s capital. Carlos, a member of the El Paso-based nonprofit group “Mexicans in Exile” is calling the ride “Pedaling for Justice”. He is focused on creating something positive out of his terrible experience.
Carlos is training intensively. He needs funding for equipment, and for his support crew during the 13 day ride. He needs funding for a press conference and rally in Austin at the end of his journey. Please donate. Help Carlos heal!
